The project began as a social practice initiative. Over the course of a month, I interviewed twenty Black women across Los Angeles about safety, environment, bodily freedom, and their relationships to outdoor space. Their stories informed a series of portraits that explored the historical and contemporary connections Black women have to nature, refuge, and belonging.
Drawing on my longstanding practice in large-scale public art, Speaking to Falling Seeds brought together portraiture, community engagement, and site-specific installation to create an immersive environment centered on Black women's experiences, memories, and visions of freedom.
